Holy Moments

by Grady King –

Seventeen men and women. HOPE Network retreat.
Our friend and mentor, Lynn Anderson was absent.
Not his desire, rather, his health.
We miss him.

A video call. Vintage Lynn. Someone said,
“Lynn, give us a Psalm.”

No hesitation, with supplemental required oxygen,
in raspy genuineness, we heard ancient words
from our friend and mentor—

How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I bear pain in my soul,
and have sorrow in my heart all day long?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O LORD my God!
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,
and my enemy will say, “I have prevailed”;
my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.
But I trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt
bountifully with me.
Psalm 13

It was a holy moment. Call ended.
Silence. Tears. Song—Bless the Lord, O My Soul.
More tears. Holy moment.  Thank you, Lord!

Sometimes we experience holy moments—
those times when heaven and earth converge in our soul and spirit.
When we realize a life experience has profound meaning.
And in those times we know, without a doubt, God’s glory and presence.

Sometimes they come and stay a while in our soul.
Sometimes they are like a vapor quickly vanishing in the air.
Sometimes, they bring us to silence and tears.
But they always, call us back to God as faith etchings in our heart—
to go on with deep gratitude and hope.

Holy moments.
Words spoken at just the right time
Needed conversation when least expected
Welcome embrace by an estranged friend

Holy moments.
Harvest moon close enough to touch
Light show in the heavens on a dark night
Brisk fall morning sweeping through your spirit

Holy moments.
Silence. Solitude. Prayer.
Touch. Tears. Laughter.
Friends. Family. Faith.

Holy moments.
Songs piercing the soul.
Prayers seizing the spirit.
Scriptures refreshing the mind.

Holy moments.
People created in God’s image.
People sharing God’s image.
People shaped by people in God’s image.

Holy moments.
Needed.
Wanted.
Experienced.

Thank you, Lord!
