Many people make special contributions at the end of the year. Some want to avail themselves of the tax advantage. Others realize they fell behind on their planned giving and want to make it up. Still others receive bonuses or end-of-year gifts and want to give a portion of these.
Giving Rocket, lists five good reasons to have an end-of-year giving campaign or at least to emphasize and encourage end-of-year giving:
- People are naturally generous during the holidays.
- Nonprofits are competing for people’s dollars.
- December 31 is the ultimate deadline.
- You can fund special projects.
- You will reach new givers and engage those who have not given to your church for a long time.
You can find expert guidance here about planning and carrying out a year-end giving initiative.
Below are the most important action items:
- In December begin putting an item in your bulletin, e-newsletter, and website about Year-End Giving; e.g, “We encourage and gratefully receive year-end gifts, including stock. To make sure your gift is counted for 2024, please make sure it is received in the church office by December 30 or electronically by midnight December 31.”
- Mention it from the pulpit along these same lines. It means a LOT to hear it from the preacher.
- Add “If you have any questions or need guidance, contact [Name/email/phone number of financial administrator or church secretary].”
- Consider designating a special ministry or objective for year-end giving, such as missions, a new children’s playground, a community mental health center or food bank, etc.
By encouraging and helping people give in a special way we are helping them grow in faith and to know the joy of generosity.
